Hanialis Fountain in Heraklion 
Until the early 20th century, the mansion of Hanialis stood on present-day Zografou Street in Heraklion. Incorporated into its exterior was the fountain that can now be seen beside the exit of Saint George Gate. Dating from 1709, it is one of the surviving public works of the Ottoman period in Heraklion.
After the mansion was demolished, the fountain was removed from its original position and transferred to its present location at the beginning of Ikarou Avenue. Its new position is close to the original site, beside the eastern exit of the vaulted passage of Saint George Gate.
The fountain is set beneath an arch decorated with carved floral motifs. A stone panel occupies the interior of the arch, while the water spout is surrounded by an elaborate relief frame. The water flowed into a marble basin bearing similar carved decoration.
Together with the other surviving Ottoman fountains of Heraklion, the Hanialis Fountain illustrates the important role played by public water fountains in the everyday life of the city’s inhabitants.
