Gay Friendly beaches in Crete
Over the last few years, Crete has become a popular destination for gay travelers, with even gay cruise ships calling at the island’s largest ports. Although gay nightlife in Crete is not particularly developed, the island’s remarkable natural beauty attracts visitors from all over the world. Gay travelers will not find large gay clubs or lively gay neighborhoods here, but the island offers many welcoming places where locals and visitors can meet and relax.
Below we present six of the most popular gay-friendly beaches in Crete. None of them is exclusively gay, but gay visitors are welcome. As always, please respect other beachgoers, the local environment and each beach’s character.
1. Sarandari Nudists’ Beach
Near Hersonissos, below the coastal road and the tavern of Sarandaris, a rocky naturist beach is hidden beneath steep cliffs. It is one of the best-known gay-friendly meeting spots in Crete and a popular choice for swimming, sunbathing and socializing.
2. Komos Beach
Very close to Matala, Komos is one of the most popular beaches among gay travelers visiting southern Crete. The gay-friendly and naturist section lies toward the quieter northern part of this long sandy beach, away from the organized areas.
3. Maherida Beach
Maherida is a beautiful secluded cove on the Akrotiri peninsula, northeast of Chania. Its calm clear water, sheltered location and discreet atmosphere have made it increasingly popular with gay visitors staying in Chania and the surrounding resorts.
4. Kavros Beach
Between Kavros and Georgioupolis, dunes and a narrow belt of vegetation separate the main road from a long sandy shore. Quieter sections of the beach are known as meeting places for gay travelers and offer plenty of room away from the busiest organized areas.
5. Ammoudaki Beach
In the wider Plakias area, between Damnoni and Ammoudi, lies the small and spectacular beach of Ammoudaki. Part of the beach is traditionally naturist-friendly, and it is a frequent choice for gay travelers wishing to enjoy the sun in a relaxed setting.
6. Peristeras Beach
Peristeras forms the quiet eastern part of Ierapetra’s long beach. It is less exposed to passing crowds than the central waterfront, and its more secluded stretches attract gay visitors looking for swimming, sunbathing and a peaceful atmosphere.
