At the easternmost end of Chrissi Island, on its southern coast, lies the long Vages Beach. The seabed is generally rocky, except at the eastern end of the beach, where there is a sandy section. Small boats and inflatable dinghies often anchor in this sheltered bay, as the sea is usually calm and the beach offers plenty of seclusion.
The name Vages derives from the Cretan word “vaga”, meaning a large channel or passage. According to local people, the area was given this name because of the wide opening in the rocky seabed, which allows boats to pass safely through and approach the shore.
