Michael Archangel church in Sarakina
(1 Vote)

The temple of Michael Archangel is hidden amidst centuries-old olive groves a few meters out of the settlement Sarakina, province Selino, and very close to the village cemetery. The church is built on the site of the middle aisle of a three-aisled and wooden-roofed early Christian basilica, from which part of the arch of the sanctuary is preserved.

The interior has a built iconostasis and frescoes dating back to the early 14th century, around 1325, and attributed to the workshop of the famous painter of Western Crete, Ioannis Pagomenos. The pictorial program includes scenes of the gospel and the circle of archangels in the arch and standing saints in the low parts, and Michael Archangel in the arch.
