Spaniakos

Spaniakos Koules
(4 votes)

The Turkish Tower (koule) of Spaniakos protected the village of Spaniakos in the province of Selino; Spaniakos was a famous Turkish village during the Ottoman period in Crete with the largest mosque in Crete. The koule controlled the ravines, passages and peaks around, while to the south it has panoramic views to the South Cretan Sea. Spaniakos koule was probably built after the suppression of the Great Revolution of 1866-1869, when hundreds of other koules were built throughout the island, creating a suffocating net of forts against the rebels.
