Cretan Forts

Inadiye

Fort Inadiye (Fortezza)
(2 votes)

Fortezza is currently a suburb of Heraklion, built on a high hill next to the general hospital Venizelion. This hill was ideal for establishing a fortress, as evidenced by its name meaning fortress in Italian. Thereforem, when the Turks besieged Candia, they realized that their effort would take many years. So they decided to build a fortress in Fortezza hill, so that they could better control their movements and besiege Candia.

The Turks named the fort Inadiye, which means New Fortress, while the Venetians named it Nuova Candia. This hosted the Turkish headquarters, which directed the war against the Venetians and the Cretans.

The first action of the Turks was to stop the water supply to the city, after damaging the pipeline that brought water from the aqueduct of Morozini and passed close to Fortezza. Today, almost nothing remains from Fortezza fort, as it was completely destroyed during the construction of houses.
