These sites belong to different UNESCO programmes: the World Heritage List, the World Network of Biosphere Reserves and the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.
The Minoan Palatial Centres of Crete are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a single serial property. They comprise Knossos, Phaistos, Malia, Zakros, Zominthos and Kydonia. The six archaeological sites illustrate the development of Minoan civilization, its complex social and administrative organization, its palatial architecture and Crete’s extensive connections with the wider Mediterranean world.
The Gorge of Samaria and the Asterousia Mountain Range belong to UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves. Both areas contain important ecosystems, rare species of flora and fauna and landscapes shaped by the long interaction between local communities and the natural environment.
Samaria National Park is also included on Greece’s Tentative List for possible future nomination to the World Heritage List. Inclusion on the Tentative List is a preliminary stage and should not be confused with inscription as a World Heritage Site.
Crete has two UNESCO Global Geoparks: Psiloritis UNESCO Global Geopark and Sitia UNESCO Global Geopark. They protect landscapes and geological formations of international importance, combining the conservation of geological heritage with environmental education, local traditions and sustainable development.
