Trail Kroussonas - Livadi - Zominthos

3500 years ago the Minoans ascended to the sacred cave of Ideon Andron in plateau Nida to submit their offerings to their gods. To climb Psiloritis, they walked through the canyon of Krousonas, reached Zominthos and from there they walked to Nida. We can walk in the same trail even today and feel like modern Minoans.

Giouchtas Trail

Climbing on Giouchtas is very easy because there is a very nicely marked and visible trail that crosses the mountain from one side to the other. Giouchtas has amazing and unobstructed views towards all directions, although it is quite low (its highest peak reaches 811m altitude). The trail that crosses the mountain starts right next to very famous archaeological site of Anemospilia and ascends to the south having panoramic views across the north side of the city of Heraklion, the Cretan Sea.

Bulgarian Trail (Stalis - Mohos)

During the First World War, Bulgarian war captives were brought to Crete to reconstruct the path connecting Stalis to Mohos. Thus, they built a wider path with an average width of 2m, which for its time was a project of enormous importance. Of course, after the main road was built in the 20th century, the use of the trail virtually disappeared and now attracts only hikers.

Trail Mohos - Malia

The trail starts from the picturesque village of Mochos, crosses the village's soccer field and soon starts climbing near the old mill park where once the locals used the windmills for grinding their grain. After reaching the highest point of the route that has a unique sea view, we start the relaxing descent through a 2m wide stone paved path to Malia.

Ligiofarago Gorge

Ligiofarago is one of the few canyons of East Asterousia range that one can walk down to the sea without needing technical equipment. Recently the path has been signed, connecting Achendrias to Maridaki, running through the gorge.

Trail Gerakari - Chainospilios

From the lush mountain village of Gerakari, Amari province, in Rethymno starts one of the trails that climbs Mount Kentros and attracts many walkers. But there is a second mountain trail unknown to most, the path leading from the village to the historic cave Chainospilios. This path was cleaned with an exemplary manner, while an explanatory sign that describes the path has been placed at its starting point.

Trail Matala - Vathy

One of the most beautiful trails in Crete that one may attempt in the area of Western Asterousia is the path from Matala to Vathy beach. The route is mostly along the coast, but requires good physical condition due to long distance (11 km), lack of a marked trail and it definitely required good sun protection

Trail Kapetaniana - Agios Ioannis - Salamias

This route connects Kapetaniana with Agios Ioannis and then heads west to the beach of Salamias. The first part to Agios Ioannis on the side of the wild gorge of Goula is fairly steep and instable in some places. Then we meet the village of Agios Ioannis and the cavernous temple of the old monastery of Saint John.

Trail Kofinas - Koudoumas Monastery

This path is the main path from which the residents of Asterousia descended to Monastery Koudouma from the region of Kofinas. We first make a small detour to ascend to the highest peak of Asterousia, Kofinas (altit.1231m) where there is the church of the Holy Cross with stunning views to the sea.

Trail Tripiti - Katarti

The course starts from the beautiful beach of Tripiti formed at the exit of the the gorge of Agios Savas and at the end of the dirt tracks starting from Vasiliki and Lendas. It runs along the wild coastline and ends at the secluded beach Katarti after about 1:10.

Gorge Kinigospilios

At the small and almost deserted village Chordaki, district of Amari, we meet the small but very beautiful canyon of Kynigospilios south of the village. It is a secret place, not visible from anywhere and this is the main reason that remains it unknown. The canyon Kynigospilios has enough water flow during the winter months till the end of spring, which comes from the slopes of Mount Kedros.

Livadouria Route

Since 2013, some villages of Apokoronas province organizes the route Livadouria at province Apokoronas. This beautiful route crosses the villages Tsivaras, Saint Paul, Douliana and Gavalochori. Livadouria path has a total length of 6 km and comes acorss an area blessed by nature, full of olive groves, woods of cypresses, holm oaks and myrtles.

Strouboulas Mount

Strouboulas is the first peak that one can see from Heraklion when looking to the west. The height of the tops is 798 meters above sea level, a small altitude compared to the surrounding mountains and the range of Psiloritis it actually belongs. What makes Strouboulas special and beloved by the locals is its shape reminiscent of the pyramid or volcano when looking from Heraklion. In fact, however, its shape is elongated from east to west but from the city it looks like a perfect pyramid.

Prinias Gorge (Lagouta)

Adjacent and parallel to the current highway linking Heraklion to Messara plane, between the villages Prinias and Avgeniki, a beautiful canyon is formed. Its descent requires the use of canyoning equipment, as it forms some steep descents.

Rizopetro Gorge

On the southeast side of Mount Sanida, near the village Skourvoula, a small but very wild gorge is formed called Rizopetro. The gorge ends near Faneromeni dam after a very impressive 60m high waterfall, having water only after heavy rainfalls.
