Chora Sfakion, often simply called Sfakia, is a picturesque small town located about 74 km south of Chania, on the southern coast of Western Crete. It serves as the main port that connects with the island Gavdos and the remote coastline of the Sfakia region. It is the economic and administrative center of this rugged and mountainous Sfakia province.
Just below the Sfakia fortress and inside the small harbor of Chora, you will find the beach of Ombrosgialos. It is minimally organized, has a southern orientation, and is sheltered by the piers of the harbor. The name Ombrosgialos means “front shore,” distinguishing it from the second beach in Chora Sfakion, Vrysi beach, which is located to the west.
Due to its proximity to the main port, most visitors prefer Vrysi beach for swimming, although it is more exposed to the frequent western winds.
Above the beach stands the Heroes Monument, with cannons and a beautiful view of the sea. It commemorates the evacuation of the last Allied troops, British, New Zealanders, and Australians, from this cove between May 28 and June 1, 1941, during the Battle of Crete.
