The beach known as “Tou Sfoungara to Mnima” is located in southeastern Crete, in the Trachilas area of the Lithines territory, between Kalo Nero and Makry Gialos. It lies 66 km southeast of Agios Nikolaos and 29 km east of Ierapetra, relatively close to Kapsas Monastery. It is the second and central of three consecutive coves in the wider area known as Ammoudi, also referred to as Second Ammoudi, west of the main Ammoudi beach or Dragon’s Cave.

Here, the coastline forms an almost semicircular cove enclosed by tall cliffs, which provide natural shade throughout the day. Unlike the first cove of Ammoudi, which features golden sand, this beach is covered with fine pebbles and has a rocky seabed. The landscape is characterized by pale colored rocks that resemble those found on the beaches of Koufonissi isle. The area is of geological interest, as it forms part of the Sitia Geopark and features conglomerate rocks and Messinian gypsum deposits, estimated to be about 5.5 million years old.

A distinctive feature of the beach is the composition of the cliffs rising above the sea, which consist of soft clay. Because of this material, the beach is also known locally as “Laspoloutra” (mud spa) since the clay can be applied naturally to the body and is believed to have therapeutic benefits for the skin.

Access to the beach is via the road connecting Makrigialos with Goudouras and requires a short walk, as vehicles do not reach the shore. The starting point is near Ammoudi, from where visitors head west along dirt roads and footpaths. The descent to the beach follows a small ravine and requires caution, as the clay soil is unstable and rainfall often creates deep cuts in the ground.
