Fylakas is a tiny beach at the base of the western side of Cape Fylakas of Tripiti in the Asterousia Mountains about 73 kilometers south of Heraklion and on the eastern border of the community of Miamou. It is one of the most isolated parts of Crete, as there is no way to get to the beach from land.
The approach to this little paradise, as to many others in Asterousia, is only possible from the sea by swimming from the adjacent rocks, where you can leave your belongings.
The tiny bay of Fylakas is located at the meeting point of the limestone and flysch of Asterousia, the two rocks that dominate the area. The limestone side creates a vertical tectonic mirror that continues for many meters into the sea.
A cave is created above the beach, which offers shade during the hot hours of the day, but the ground is quite loose and requires caution. In the sea it creates another series of caves that are suitable for exploration.
The western side of Fylakas is characterized by amazing phyllite soils and folds created by flysch. The landscape is one of the most impressive in all of Asterousia and continues for a long distance and along the entire coastline to the west where a second, less impressive beach is created
