On the way to Elafonisi from the road running along the west coast of Crete, there is the beautiful village of Cambos belonging to Kissamos province. From there a short dirt road heads to the west which heads to the lush canyon of Kambos, the westernmost gorge of Crete.
Along the canyon there is a beautiful trekking path running below the shadow of huge plane trees, next to the river bed which’s first part has water all year round. The walls have impressive formations for half an hour, till we reach a water spring. There we meet again the road that descends from the village to the cavernous church of Agia Kyriaki, a few meters later.
From Agia Kyriaki we walk along the riverbed that soon reached the secluded, but beautiful pebbly beach of Platanakia where plane trees reach the sea.
