Karantale Gorge 
Karantale Gorge is located in the center of Rethymno Prefecture and gets its name after the abandoned village of Karantale, which is located close to its entrance. The vegetation is spectacular and the canyon is a very good option for a daily excursion.
The canyon, also spelled as Karantaliotiko, starts near the village of Agios Ioannis, where a beautiful cypress wood, and ends at Saitoures village. Its length is about 3km and walking in it is very easy. The stream continues its course till it meets the main stream of Petres river. The route is easy, with almost no technical difficulties, making it suitable for hikers of all experience levels.
Most of the hike follows the streambed beneath dense tree cover, providing welcome shade even on warm days. During spring and after periods of rainfall, several small natural pools are formed, adding to the beauty of the landscape and creating a refreshing atmosphere.
Along the way, visitors can spot the remains of an old watermill and a traditional lime kiln, reminders of the area's rural past. In recent years, sections of the trail have been improved and better defined, making the route even more enjoyable for visitors.
