Panagia Rodea church at Rogdia

The church of Panagia of Rodea is dedicated to the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary (celebr. March 25th) and is located in the center of the village Rogdia, next to the magnificent 16th-century villa Modino.

Savvathiana Monastery near Rogdia

The monastery of Savatiana or Savvathiana is located in a beautiful wooded and well-protected position near Rogdia, at an altitude of 440m and at a distance of 20km west of the city of Heraklion. The monastery is one of the several monasteries that operated in the area during the Venetian period, which was later mercilessly destroyed by the Turks.

Agia Irini Monastery near Kroussonas

Agia Irini monastery is located 25km south of Heraklion and 3km west of Kroussonas village, on the slopes of Psiloritis at an altitude of 630m. It can be accessed via the road connecting Kroussonas with Livadi plateau.

Saint George Gorgolainis Monastery

The monastery of Saint George Gorgolainis is located at an altitude of 480m, next to the village Asites, 24km south of Heraklion. It is built at a lush green area with huge platan, cypress and oak trees. Indeed, one platan and one cypress tree inside the complex have been declared as protected natural monuments by law.

Pantanassa Monastery near Rogdia

Monastery of Agia Fotini the Samaritan

The Monastery of Agia Fotini the Samaritan is located at Ellinoperamata, Malevizi district, on the road leading to Rodia village. It was founded in June 1991 by the Archbishop of Crete, Timotheos. The monastery houses the church of Agia Fotini, the chapel of St. Fanourios, the nuns’ cells and the tomb of the founder of the monastery, Timotheos.

Panagia Kavallara monastery

The monastery of Panagia Kera Kavallaras operated as a dependency of Dionysiou Monastery at Athos in the 15th century and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The temple of the ruined monastery is well maintained, but has undergone many alterations. The location oversees the plains of Malevizi and Heraklion.

Panagia Kera Eleousa monastery, Kitharida

The highly impressive temple of St. Fanourios at Kitharida, currently used as a cemetery, was the temple of an important male monastery of Panagia Eleousa (Our Lady the Merciful). The monastery was a dependency of the Monastery of Saint Irene.

Chrysopigi monastery at Pirgou

The monastery of Chrysopigi is built in a wooded ravine with plane trees by the village Pirgou but now does not operate. A spring is located in the courtyard of the monastery. Next to the church there are the remains of winepress and olive mill.

Jerusalem monastery at Loutraki

The Venetian monastery of Jerusalem is located at village Loutraki but now does not operate. The monastery was a center of revolutionary activity against the Turks and refuge for some of the most famous chieftains of Crete.

Saint George church at Hymeftou

The wonderful location Hymeftou near the village Moni houses the scenic church dedicated to St. George and the Holy Cross. This was the site of the monastery of the Holy Cross which was a dependency of the monastery Kavallaras at Korfes.

Saint Savas Church at Ellinoperamata

The current deserted monastery of St Savas is located at a degraded location of Heraklion (next to the industries of cement and fuel at Ellinoperamata). The monastery was founded in the 10th century by Nicephorus Phocas.

Panagia Deligara church at Ligaria

The monastery of Panagia Deligara, Ligaria or Ligariotissa operated at the site that we meet today the church of Panagia (Our Lady) near Ligaria Beach. The monastery is mentioned in a document of 1610 as Panagia Deligara.

Saint Anthony monastery at Petali

The ruined monastery of St. Anthony at location Petali was one of the finest religious monuments that patiently awaits its restoration. Here we discern the destroyed two-aisled church that was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St. Anthony. The south wall, the only one still standing belongs to the nave of St. Anthony.

Panagia monastery at Fraskia

Here you will meet the ruins of the monastery Panagia Fraskia (Faschea) mentioned on almost all maps of the Venetian Era, having been one of the most important monasteries in Venetian Crete. Panagia, mentioned by Buontelmonti in 1415, was founded in the late 12th century at the point where the Venetians used as a natural harbor (the cove of Fraskia).

Panagia Kera church at Sarchos

By Sarchos we meet one of the most impressive churches of Cretan innerland with a beautiful relief entrance and rear window, which is dedicated to the Birth of the Virgin Mary. The church dates back to the 14th century and is double-aisled, bearing very important frescoes.
