Trail Profitis Ilias - Arhanes
(2 votes)

This part of the E4 European trail connects Profitis Ilias to Arhanes, after bypassing the massif of Giouchtas, being very easy and ideal for cycling. The route offers nice views of the valley between Giouchtas and Profitis Ilias, being full of vineyards, and the west steep cliffs of Giouchtas. Our course starts from Profitis Ilias, built below the imposing rock of Rocca, which was fortified and we can still wander in the fort and the Venetian churches.

We leave the fort and head towards Giouchtas mountain via dirt roads. We have amazing views to the imposing west cliffs of Giouchtas, which has been declared protected reserve. We keep walking and come by the small settle Karnari, below the cave of Stravomitis. Then, through asphalt road, we bypass Giouchtas from its south side and follow the dirt road that climbs to the peak sanctuary but soon we enter the trail to Archanes. Archanes is a small town with very well preserved churches, traditional houses and public buildings, and a favorite weekend destination for the residents of Heraklion.

It is strongly suggested to ascend to the chapel of Christ on Giouchtas, although not included in the E4 trail.
