Ierapetra

Saint George church at Stavrochori
(1 Vote)

A few meters from the central square of the village Stavrochori (formerly Stravodoxari) in the province Ierapetra is the oldest neighborhood of the village, Mesochoria. In the square of Mesochoria, where narrow picturesque alleys lead, is the two-aisled church of Saint George (Agios Georgios) and Panagia Zoodochos Pigi (Life Giving Spring).

The southern aisle of the church is dedicated to Saint George. This nave preserves part of the original frescoes dating from the Venetian Period. The north aisle of the Zoodochos Pigi was added in a later phase and does not bear murals.
