Gavdos is the amazing island where the shipwrecked Odysseus was welcomed the Calypso, the anchorage of travelers and traders from Africa and the pirates, the place of thousands of summer visitors. Gavdos is the southernmost part of Europe, 32 nautical miles away from Paleochora, 22 from Sfakia and 170 in Tobruk, Libya. It is a small island belonging to Chania prefecture, just 30 km squares with triangular shape, with a maximum length of 10 km and width 5km. Karave, Korfos, Lakkoudi, Tripiti, Fetife, Sarakiniko, Agiannis, Lavrakas, Pirgos and Potamos beaches are some of the finest pearls of coast of the island. Kastri, Xenaki, Vatsiana and Ambelos are some of the picturesque settlements here.

Tourkavlako beach in Gavdos

Tourkavlako beach is located a little north of the port of Karave in Gavdos. The beach has pebbles and sand, while deeper it has rocks. There is no natural shade, which makes it hard for someone to stay there without shade all day long.

Stavrolimni beach at Gavdos

Stavrolimni beach, also known as Stravolimni, is located at the northernmost tip of Gavdos. More specifically, it lies on the footpath that connects the beaches of Lavrakas and Pyrgos.

Gavdos Lighthouse

The lighthouse of Gavdos is built a few meters south of the village Ambelos at an altitude of 368m, at the west coastline. Constructed in 1880 by the French Company for Lighthouses and was visible at a distance of 42 miles (the second longest distance in the world since then, after the lighthouse of Tierra del Fuego).

Gavdos folklore museum

The folklore museum of Metohi - Sgoudiana is located near Korfos beach at Gavdos Island and was founded by the priest Emmanouel Bikogiannakis, who collected all Gavdian day life tools, agricultural and shipbuilding equipment, traditional costumes, household items, etc.

Beach Diana in Gavdos

The beach that stands out from all of the west side of Gavdos is Diana. Diana is actually the second southernmost beach in Europe, after Tripiti which is located a few meters to the southeast. The beach stands out from the rest as it is less rocky, has small pebbles and has a massive rock below which you can find shade all day.

Karave beach in Gavdos

Karave beach has round pebbles and heads south to Korfos bay. It is not organized, but is the only choice for those who want to swim near the port. The water is crystal clear and quite deep. Karave is not very special about swimming, especially if you compare with the rest beaches of Gavdos.

Sarakiniko beach in Gavdos

It is named after the Saracen pirates who once used the island as a base of attacks. Sarakiniko, like all beaches in Gavdos is one of the best beaches in Greece that any description can not fit the beauty. It is located on a large cove bay looking north.

Agiannis beach in Gavdos

Lavrakas beach in Gavdos

The beach Lavrakas is located about 2km west of Agiannis, near the northern edge of Gavdos. Lavrakas can be accessed by walking 20'-30' Agiannis, where you can go by bus. Lavrakas is a fantastic beach with golden sand and turquoise water. It is no organized and is one of the most secluded beaches, since it is accessed only on foot.

Pirgos beach in Gavdos

Pirgos has two adjacent emerald sandy beaches, which are absolutely unorganized and isolated. Many campers prefer Pirgos for camping, as it is very far from any tourist infrastructure. The beaches are hidden in the heart of a large bay, surrounded by dunes and junipers and protected by steep cliffs.

Potamos beach in Gavdos

Tripiti beach in Gavdos

The beach of Tripiti is located 7km south of Karave harbor and is the southernmost point of Gavdos and Europe. The eastern part of the beach is sandy, while the part close to the "tip" of Gavdos has large stones and pebbles.

Lakoudi beach in Gavdos

1km south of Korfos settlement, at Gavdos island, there is a very quiet beach with amazing bottom, Lakoudi, accessed only by walking from Korfos or by boat. Lakoudi is one of the nicest beaches on the island and surely deserves a visit.

Korfos beach in Gavdos

Korfos (i.e. Bosom) is located approximately 2km south of Karave, the only port in Gavdos. There is a footpath along the coast from Karave that leads to the dorp of Korfos (60'). Moreover, there is a bus running to Korfos from Karave.

General information about Gavdos

lighthouse at Ambelos

A few residents live on the island throughout the year and the infrastructure for tourists is very basic. According to the census of 2001, Gavdos has 98 permanent residents. The truth is that fewer than 50 live permanently here, but when the census was done, 98 people were on the island. In summer, the total population reaches 3500, most of whom are campers. The port of Gavdos is Karave. It’s capital village is Kastri, while the southernmost inhabited village is Vatsiana with 23 residents. Gavdos is a fishing place, with few but good-hearted people who with patience wait for better days of summer to see their island swarmed with visitors.

Fetifes beach in Gavdos

While hiking from Sarakiniko bay to the most famous beach of Gavdos, namely Agiannis, you will meet the small and serene beach of Fetife(s) at location Karediana. Next to it there is a small tavern and the last point where you can reach by car. The beach is formed at the exit of the small stream of Agios Pavlos, in which small ponds are formed in winter.

Potamos gorge in Gavdos

Potamos beach in northwestern Gavdos is formed at the outlet of various small streams. Their soils are mainly clay, which makes them create special formations as they are dissolved by rain and wind. Some of the formed streams pass through harder rocks, creating deep canyons with waterfalls of amazing beauty, which, however, can be seen by someone with water even in winter relatively rarely.
