Trail Agios Georgios - Limnakaro - Varsami - Selakano
(4 votes)

This part of the E4 trail offers some excellent mountaineering experience with amazing scenery changes. The highlights of the route include the views to Lassithi Plateau and Selakano slopes. The route takes about 6 hours, so you could split it in two and stay overnight in Strovili shelter.

We start our course from Agios Georgios village at Lassithi Plateau and follow the E4 European trail that ascends to Limnakaro plateau, while having some very nice views to Lassithi plateau. In Limnakaro we can visit the Byzantine church of Agio Pnevma (Holy Spirit) that retains some traces of frescoes. Above Limnakaro, we could stay overnight at Strovili shelter and continue our route from there on the next morning.

From Limnakaro, we follow the signage leading to the peak Afendis Christos (Lord Christ) or Spathi, via the spring Avarsami (or Varsami). From Varsami, one can continue south to the peak Afendis. If we visit the spring Varsami, we have to return to the saddle before the spring. From here, we can continue northeast to conquer the highest peak of Dikte, Spathi (2148m).

From the saddle, the E4 continues to the south and passes on the south side of Dikti Range. It runs by the spring Asfendami and continues its downhill course to the wood of Selakano, the largest pine forest in Crete. In Selakano settlement we can stop for a coffee or food.
