Loutro is a small seaside village on the southern coast of the historic province of Sfakia, approximately 71km south of Chania. It stands inside a sheltered bay near Cape Mouri and has no road connection. The village can be reached by ferry from Chora Sfakion or on foot along the coastal trail.

The modern village occupies the area of ancient Phoenix or Katopolis, which served as the harbour of ancient Anopolis. Its naturally protected bay provided a safe anchorage for vessels over many centuries. The name Loutro, meaning “bath” in Greek, is traditionally associated with ancient bathing installations discovered in the area.

The small beaches of Yialos and Keramos lie directly in front of the settlement and are described on the page about the beaches of Loutro. Other nearby destinations that can be reached on foot or by small boat include Glyka Nera, Timios Stavros and Pervolaki, Likos and Finikas and Marmara Beach.

The absence of cars, the whitewashed houses surrounding the harbour and the steep landscape of Sfakia give Loutro its peaceful atmosphere. The village has small hotels, rooms, tavernas and cafés. Ferry services are mainly seasonal and connect Loutro with Chora Sfakion and other coastal settlements of southern Crete.

What to see in Loutro

Above the village stand the remains of the Ottoman fort of Loutro, which overlooked the bay and the surrounding sea routes. The old school and the Church of Panagia are situated near the waterfront. In 1821 Loutro became the seat of the Chancellery of Sfakia, while a hospital for wounded revolutionaries operated in the area.

Hikers can follow the coastal section of the European E4 trail or climb towards Anopolis along the steep old mule trail from Loutro. Farther west lies the impressive Aradena Gorge.
