Kritama beach is located on the southern coastline of the Chania prefecture, within the boundaries of the Skaloti village in the province of Sfakia. Geographically, it is situated east of Orthi Ammos beach and Frangokastelo, approximately 80 kilometers south of the city of Chania. It consists of a series of secluded sandy beaches. The area's name derives from the "kritamo" plant (Crithmum maritimum), a halophyte that thrives and grows in abundance on the cliffs surrounding the coast.
The natural landscape at Kritama is characterized by geological diversity, as the steep cliffs behind the beach consist of successive rock layers with varying colorations. Natural clay can be found at specific spots on the rocks; it is accessible to visitors and used for mud baths and clay therapy. Furthermore, the cliffs host springs with running fresh water that flows year-round. Of particular note is the existence of a spring on the small western beach which provides potable water.
Both the beach and the seabed are covered in fine sand, free of rocks or stones in the water, while the waters are shallow and the temperature is usually warm. Due to its location and the cliffs, the beach offers seclusion.
Accessing Kritama is difficult, which limits mass visitation. The most recommended way to reach it is by sea, via boat. Alternatively, access can be achieved from the easternmost end of neighboring Orthi Ammos, though this requires walking through the water along the coastline to bypass the intervening rocky obstacles.
