Folklore and Historical Museum of Sitia

The Folklore and Historical Museum of Sitia was founded in 1975 and is housed in a beautiful neo-classical house in Sitia. It was founded in 1975 by the Progressive Association of Sitia "Vitsentzos Kornaros" to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the wider Sitia region. It is housed in a two-storey urban residence dating from the late 19th century, located on the historic Kapetan Sifi Street in the old town.
The museum's collections illustrate everyday life in Eastern Crete from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. The exhibits include traditional farming and carpentry tools, household utensils, pottery, furniture, local costumes, embroidery and woven textiles, many of which were donated by local families.
The exhibition is arranged into thematic sections featuring traditional professions, a reconstructed urban Cretan house, an old classroom, a weaving workshop with an authentic loom, and a collection of traditional musical instruments from the Sitia area. Visitors can also explore displays dedicated to occupations that have now disappeared, offering a comprehensive overview of the region's social and economic life.
Today, the Folk-Historical Museum of Sitia is one of the most important museums of its kind in Lasithi, preserving the traditions, craftsmanship and everyday culture that have shaped the identity of Eastern Crete for generations.
