Fratiano Gorge is one of the long canyons of Rethymno Prefecture, running alongside Kourtaliotiko Gorge and crossing the mount Xiro Oros. Its entrance is located 23km southeast of Rethymnon, next to the village Frati, and it mouth is located near the upper part of the gorge Kourtaliotiko. The river that flows in the gorge originates from the area of Gious Kambos, then passes through the Kissano Gorge and the valley of Spili with the numerous springs, then passes through the Fratiano Gorge and then flows into the river of Kourtaliotis, a little after the bridge of Megalos River, before reaching the beach of Preveli.
The route in the gorge is quite strenuous, as it has several small waterfalls and swimming is required in many of its narrow spots, making it an ideal destination for River Trekking even in summer! The journey from the village of Frati to the bridge of the Megalos River requires about 6-7 hours and in many places special attention is required. After 5 hours we meet a waterfall of 6-7 meters, which requires a detour (right up, through a barbed wire) and after a dirt road network we reach the stone bridge. After the merging of the river with the Kourtaliotiko river, you can continue your journey to the beach of Preveli for another 2-3 hours. Around the middle of the gorge it joins the Diblohoriano Gorge, which is technical and requires canyoning equipment for its descent.
