The only one church dedicated to Saint Ambrose is located in Crete and specifically at Kalloni near Heraklion. It is the main church of the village and is double- aisled.
The church of Agia Marina in the green area of Moulefe belongs to the administrative boundaries of Panagia village of Pediada province. This was formerly a strategic point, as the roads to the Sanctuary of Hermes and Aphrodite in Symi, the Ancient Erganos and the Diktaean Cave crossed here in the Minoan times.
A few meters southwest to the village Kassani of Pediada province and near the old village fountain there is the single-nave arched church of the Savior Christ dedicated to the Birth of Jesus. It was built on the site of an older temple, as evidenced by the shape of the arch of the sanctuary.
Very close to the settlement of Xidas, today called Lyttos after the nearby ancient town Lyttos, we meet the church of Saint George (Agios Georgios) at position Tzeneralidon (there is also the church of Saint George inside the archaeological site of Lyttos).
The large cemeterial church of Panagia at village Sklaverochori is dedicated to the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple (celebrates November 21). The church dates back to the 14th century (there is an engraving with date 1481).
The small church of Saint Nicholas is located between Lyttos and Kastamonitsa. It bears frescoes of a provincial painter dating back from the 14th century with vivid scenes from the Christological cycle. Frescoes that stand out are the Infanticide in southern wall, the sacrifice of Abraham, and Saint Zosimas.
The large temple of the Agia Zoni (Cincture of Virgin Mary) is located inside the village of Agies Paraskies and celebrates the day of the Cincture of the Theotokos (August 31) which is the last day of the Greek Orthodox church year. The church dates back to the 11th century and has frescoes that are very hard to discern.
The church of Saint George (Agios Georgios) Kefaliotis is located at Kefali hill, within the boundaries of the villages Amariano and Kastamonitsa in the province of Pediada and belongs to the parish of Amariano.
The church of the Panagia (Virgin Mary) in Kastamonitsa is located inside the cemetery of the village and is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin (feast 15 August). The folklorist Georgios Stamatakis considers that it was probably a Catholic monastery, since it is not recorded in any census of temples during the Venetian Era (the monasteries were not listed).
The monastery of Panagia Spiliotissa is located 22km south of Heraklion, between the villages Houdetsi and Agios Vasilios. It is hidden in the sides of the lush green Spiliotissa canyon. It can be easily accessed by walking on a green path, 500m long, from Houdetsi. Along this path you will see the Byzantine churches of St. John and Anthony, and two old water mills.
The monastery of Kallergis or Kaleris is located southeast of Smari village, about 35km east of Heraklion and 4km north of Kastelli. It is built in a wooded area with many hills and mountainous morphology.
The monastery of St. John Theologos (John the Apostle) in Anopolis is located relatively close to Heraklion. Although it has experienced the cruelty of the Turks during the Turkish occupation of Crete, the monastery still operates today. It is built in a beautiful valley at an altitude of 170m, southeast of Anopolis.
The monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is located at an elevated position, east of the village Sgourokefali. The nunnery was founded in 1990 and has beautiful views to the village of Sgourokefali.
The monastery of Kera Eleoussa is located next to the village Voritsio and belongs to the monastery of Agarathos. The monastery is built on a hill at three different levels, because of the slope.
The Monastery of Virgin Mary Theogennitor is located very close to Mohos and is built on a unique location with views of the coast of Stalis. The monastery, although new, has gained a great reputation mainly because of its founder father Apostolos. Apostolos was a former monk of the monastery of St. John in Anopolis and in 2009 he was evicted and founded this monastery.
The monastery of Panagia Gouverniotissa is located near the village Potamies, 3km east of Heraklion. Today it operates as a monastery, but the church is used regularly for liturgies. It is built on a small hill with nice views to Potamies valley.
The church of St. George Kleidas is located at a beautiful site close to Katalagari village and is the temple of a small monastery that operated here during the Venetian period, probably as a dependency of a larger monastery. The name Klidas is probably taken after the surname of the founder or owner of the land.
Saint George at the beautiful pine-wooded position Toupaki by Episkopi was the temple of a small monastery, which since 16th century was a dependency of the monastery Agarathos.
About one kilometer southeast of the village Skalani, Heraklion Province, at the position Aposami survives today the medieval monastery of St. Minas. Built at a very fertile area amid vineyards and olive groves endures until today the fate of abandonment and desolation as so many unknown treasures and monuments of Cretan countryside.
Near the village Galifa, province Pediada, survives the two-aisled church of Agia Paraskevi and Agios Panteleimon. The temple dates back to the 13th century and bears great frescoes of a provincial painter, in very good condition.
