Tris Ekklissies

Heraklion

Tris Ekklisies village

Tris Ekklisies is a small seaside settlement approximately 64km south of Heraklion, in the heart of the wild landscape of the Asterousia Mountains. It belongs to the area of the village of Paranymfi, in the historic province of Monofatsi.

The settlement is reached from Paranymfi by an asphalt road with numerous bends and impressive views of the South Cretan Sea. The route crosses a rugged landscape of steep slopes, gorges and carob trees before descending to the coast.

Tris Ekklisies is situated near the exit of the imposing Ambas Gorge, which forms one of the highest seasonal waterfalls in Crete. Archaeological remains and traces of Early Christian churches indicate that the wider area has been inhabited since antiquity.

The name Tris Ekklisies means “three churches” and refers to the churches of the Transfiguration of the Saviour, Saint George and the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. A small monastic establishment dedicated to the Virgin Mary operated at the site for many years.

Nature and beaches

The mountains surrounding Tris Ekklisies form an important habitat for the birds of prey of Crete. Griffon vultures and the rare bearded vulture live in the area, while extensive stands of carob trees grow on the surrounding slopes.

The village is a useful base for exploring the rugged coastline of the Asterousia Mountains, where small beaches, sea caves and isolated coves are formed. Many parts of the coast can be reached only by boat or by demanding hiking routes.

The easiest beach to reach is the central beach of Tris Ekklisies, with coarse sand and deep water. Rooms, tavernas and cafés operate in the settlement, particularly during the main visitor season.

At the range Asterousia to the south of Heraklion prefecture and just before reaching the village Paranymfi and the waterfall of Ambas we meet Amigdalos. The name of the village (almonds in Greek) is taken after the wild almond trees around. Amygdalos was a separate village to Paranymfi but due to the very short distance they seem like two neighborhoods of the same village. Today it has a few elderly residents and remains almost deserted.
