The province of Kydonia, i.e. the wider area of current Chania city, hosted a large number of monasteries and hermitages. Especially the isolated and inhospitable Cape Akrotiri or Melecha was home to dozen monks and hermits who lived a strict monastic life in caves and small convents, following the footsteps of Saint John the Hermit. Unlike Akrotiri, the fertile plane around Chania hosted many monasterial dependencies owing very large areas of olive groves and vineyards.

Church of Saints Panteleimon and Demetrius in Garipas

The church of Saints Panteleimon and Demetrius is located in the village Garipas, near Perivolia, province Kydonia. It is a two-story temple dating back to the Venetian period and has been restored. The northern aisle is dedicated to Saint Panteleimon (Agios Panteleimonas) and the south to Saint Demetrius (Agios Dimitrios).

Church of Saint George Koumbelis

The church of Saint George (Agios Georgios) Koubelis is located in the position Sodi east of Chania city and on the western base of Akrotiri peninsula, very close to the wastewater treatment plant. It was the temple of a small seaside monastery, from which no other buildings survive.

Saint George Church at Argoulides

The church of Saint George (Agios Georgios) in Argoulides is built in the 14th century, like the nearby temple of Saints Artemios and Paraskevi. Agia Kyriaki monastery at Varypetro

The monastery of Agia Kyriaki is located 12km south of Chania, near Varypetro. In 1992 the monastery was a set of ruins, but has since then it has been restored and now it is a scenic monastery of Crete.

Transfiguration Monastery at Kastelos

Agia Triada Sinai monastery

Sarakinasmonastery (Megisti Lavra dependency)

Saint George Harodias monastery at Perivolia

Very close to Perivolia province, Chania, you will find the deserted and almost unknown monastery of Saint George Harodia. The monastery was built on 12th century by a local rich lord of Chania. The monastery operated as a men’s monastery till the mid of the 20th century, when it was abandoned. Today you will still find the monk cells and the church of Saint George.

Saint Eleftherios monastery at Mournies

The abandoned monastery of Agios Eleftherios at Mournies is a dependency of Chrysopigi monastery and is located near the General Hospital of Chania, among olive groves, houses and a school. Here was baptized the most important modern Greek politician, Eleftherios Venizelos.

Saint George Mormoris Monastery

Agios Nikolaos church at Souda

There was a monastery of St. Nicolas on the islet of Souda, before it was fortified. The islet was then called "Fraronisi" (Fraros or Floros is a Catholic monk in Greek) until it was fortified, when it was renamed "Souda" after the gulf. Zoodochos Pigi Church, Alikianos

The imposing Byzantine church of the Life-Giving Fountain (Zoodohos Pihi) is located between the villages of Koufos and Alikianos, at a site with many orange and lemon trees. The temple is also known as Ai Kyrgiannis (St Mister John) after the name of St. John the Hermit or Xenos who founded it around 1030.

Church of Panagia at Therisso

The church of Panagia at Therisso is located below the huge tree of the village square and next to the statue of Eleftherios Venizelos. In the area there is the tomb of the hero Stephen Chalis, a chieftain of the period 1820-1822, who was killed in battle at position Aliakes, against the Turks, on July 25, 1822.

Cave of Saint Gerasimos at Modi

Two km south of the village Modi by Platanias (Chania) we meet is the cavernous chapel of St. Gerasimos. The location of this beautiful cave is accessed via dirt road that starts from Modi (there are information signs). The cave is located on a hillside that is covered by an ancient olive grove.The temple is built inside the cave, is spacious and has a courtyard along a long rock shelter.

Saint Andrew church at Malaxa

On the road that runs from Chania to Keramia, before reaching village Malaxa, we meet the small church of St. Andrew. Saint Andrew has always been a major milestone for the region because of the adjacent spring with water that quenched their thirst hikers from the region on their way to the villages of Keramia. The spring site is seen from afar due to the large plane located there.
