Bali village

The seaside resort of Bali is located in the historic province of Mylopotamos, in a large bay approximately 30km east of Rethymno and 43km west of Heraklion. The main road connecting Heraklion and Rethymno passes close to the village, making access particularly easy.

The coastline of Bali forms four successive coves with sandy beaches and greenish-blue waters. Most of the coves are protected from strong winds, so the sea is usually calm. The beaches are organised and suitable for families, while freshwater springs in the area help keep the sea relatively cool.

The modern village probably occupies the site of ancient Astali, which served as the harbour of ancient Axos. The area was also associated with Talos, the mythical bronze giant of Crete, after whom the Talean Mountains south of the village are traditionally believed to have been named.

During the Venetian period, the name of the area appeared as Atali, a form preserved in the name of the nearby Monastery of Attali. Different explanations have been suggested for the modern name Bali. One connects it with the Turkish word ballı, meaning “with honey”, and the former presence of many beehives. Another associates it with the word balık, meaning “fish”.

Today Bali offers hotels, apartments, tavernas, restaurants, cafés, small shops and diving centres. Excursion boats depart from the harbour and follow the impressive coastline with its sea caves and rock formations. Important religious monuments in the wider area include the Monastery of Attali and the church of Panagia Charakiani.
