The northern side of the Spinalonga peninsula is known as Armos and belongs to the community of Elounda, just opposite the island of Kalydon with the fortress of Spinalonga. It is a special place with old fields with dry stone walls that remains unknown, because there are no roads leading here. The beaches of this area can be reached relatively easily by canoe or pedal boat from Plaka.
Just opposite the fortress of Spinalonga is the area of Oxo Charakia or Skourgeto. Oxo Charakia is so named after a cluster of rocks and reefs that rise out of the water in the bay of Spinalonga (charakia in the Cretan idiom are rocks). On the opposite side of the rocks and on the tip of the peninsula, the place bears the impressive name Skourgeto. Skourges in the local dialect are the sharp stones that, with the erosion caused by the sea wave, sting as they are full of sharp points and it is impossible for a human foot to touch them without shoes.
In Skourgeto, two beautiful sandy beaches are formed with wonderful sand and transparent crystal clear waters that have unique colors while the surrounding reefs are a small paradise for lovers of the seabed. Throughout the beach area we can see ceramic shells, which indicate the presence of man since ancient times.
