Atherina beach
(7 votes)

Atherina beach is located about 70 km southeast of Agios Nikolaos and 34 km east of Ierapetra, shortly before we reach the seaside village of Goudouras. To approach it from the shore, from the main road walk along the narrow and deep dry stream, which drains the Vigla region. This stream is located about 300 meters after the church of Agii Saranda in Kalami and we walk beside it until we reach the sea, from where access to the beach is easier. There is also a bad dirt road that stops just above the eastern edge of the beach.

Atherina is one of the most beautiful secret coves for swimming, with rocks forming a small canyon and on its side a large stoney platform. The tiny beach has pebbles and incredibly clear blue waters that make swimming a real experience. One can easily find shadow on the side of the conglomerate walls of the small gorge.

The sea area around the beach is full of natural salt pans and you can pick up enough sea salt if you have a spoon with you to remove it from the rocks. In the area you can find more remote tiny beaches.
