Saint George Church at Kalamas
(1 Vote)

The imposing church of Agios Georgios (Saint George) in Kalamas, province Mylopotamos, dates back to the 12th century and is one of the most impressive churches in the prefecture of Rethymnon. It has a special architecture, as it is cross-shaped with two narthexes in front and a dome at the center of the cross, reminding of a three-aisled church. On the outer wall there is an arcosolium, which is a burial monument of Venetian Era. The church bears frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Saint George, with the most ancient hagiographies that survive dating back to the late 12th century.
