Agia Kyriaki is a picturesque corner of the city of Chania, located within the elegant and aristocratic district of Halepa. It borders the historic Tabakaria, where the old stone tanneries still stand. They are remnants of a period of intense craft and industrial activity, and today have been transformed into luxury hotels and restaurants.
Next to the beach stands the small church of Saint Kyriaki, on the site of a monastery that flourished in the early 16th century. This was where Ieremias Tzagkarolo, founder of the Monastery of the Holy Trinity in Akrotiri, once lived as a monk. In the surrounding rocks, carved shelters and small caves can still be seen. The landscape is completed by a small fishing harbor, seaside taverns, the pebbled beach, and clusters of tamarisk trees.
At a short distance, between Agia Kyriaki and Tabakaria, lies Kouloura, a small natural rock pool that is a favorite spot for the people of Chania, who consider it one of the area’s most distinctive and beloved places. From here, you will often see the children of Halepa competing in daring dives into the sea.
