Carnival customs in Crete

Apokrigiomata

Apokrigiomata feast at Gergeri
(1 Vote)

Each Year, on the day of Net Monday, a feast called apokrigiomata takes place at the scenic village of Gergeri at the outskirts of Psiloritis Mount. The name is taken after the Cretan verb apokrigiono, which means stop the meat consumption, due to the starting of Lent. This day revives customs from all over the Greek territory with many participants parading in a carnival-style.

These Dionysian customs date back to the ancient Greek Times. Some of the most famous customs are the funeral, the groom and the bride, the donkey, smudging with coal, and the bear dance. The local cultural association of Gergeri offers free raki, wine, and food, while the local musicians play traditional music. The photos of this specific album were shot in 2012, where Macedonian teams paraded in Gergeri.
