Panormo village

Panormo is a picturesque seaside village in the province of Mylopotamos, approximately 20km east of Rethymno. Built around a natural harbour on the northern coast of Crete, it has developed as a popular holiday destination while preserving much of its traditional character. The village offers accommodation, tavernas, cafés and small shops and is easily accessible from the main northern road of Crete.

Several sheltered coves and sandy beaches of Panormo can be found within and around the village. The central beach lies beside the harbour and is protected from the winds, while another sandy beach and several smaller rocky coves are situated west of the settlement.

History of Panormo

The area has been inhabited since antiquity and is traditionally identified with ancient Panormus. An important monument of its long history is the Early Christian Basilica of Agia Sofia, located south of the modern village. The large three-aisled basilica was built during the Early Christian period and is one of the most significant monuments of its kind in Crete.

During the Middle Ages, Panormo became known as Castel Milopotamo or Roumeli Kastelli. In the early 13th century, the Genoese Enrico Pescatore constructed the fortress of Castel Milopotamo, which later passed into Venetian hands. A settlement developed around the fort and gradually evolved into modern Panormo. Only a few traces of the fortifications survive near the harbour today.

In more recent times, Panormo served as an important port for the agricultural products of Mylopotamos, particularly olive oil and carob. The restored carob mill survives as a reminder of the village’s commercial past and is now used as a venue for cultural events.

Visitors can walk through the narrow streets, see the traditional houses and churches, visit the small harbour and enjoy the sheltered beaches. Panormo is also a convenient base for exploring the countryside and traditional villages of the wider Mylopotamos region.
