The imposing medieval fortress of Koules still stands at the beginning of the western breakwater of the modern port of Heraklion. Its real name is Rocca al Mare, named so by its Venetian founders. Koules, or the Great Koules like it is called, was not the sole ruler of the port.

Δίπλα στην παραλία υπάρχει ο προστατευόμενος υδροβιότοπος που σχηματίζεται στο δέλτα του ποταμού, ο οποίος φιλοξενεί πολλά σπάνια πουλιά. Επίσης, η περιοχή είναι γεμάτη καλαμιώνες και έχουν εισαχθεί ξενικά είδη όπως ευκάλυπτοι και φοίνικες.

Agios Onoufrios is a small seaside village of Akrotiri, which is located 8km north of Chania and close to Kounoupidiana. The village is actually a suburb of Chania, since it is very close to the city. It is named after the small chapel next to the beach that is dedicated to St. Onoufrios and celebrated on June 12.

Fortezza fort dominates the hill Palekastro beside the old town of Rethymnon and is one of the biggest fortresses of the Venetian Era. It has been built on the site of the citadel of ancient Rithimna and the Temple of Artemis Rokkea. The grand pentagonal fort was built in the 1573 and has perimeter 1300m long.

Η Πύλη Παντοκράτορα, περισσότερο γνωστή ως Χανιώπορτα, ήταν η κύρια δυτική έξοδος του ενετικού Χάνδακα. Το ιδιαίτερο εσωτερικό της περιλαμβάνει δύο ανεξάρτητες θολοσκέπαστες στοές, μία για την επικοινωνία της πόλης με τη δυτική Κρήτη και μία στρατιωτική, η οποία οδηγούσε στη νότια χαμηλή πλατεία του ομώνυμου προμαχώνα.

Η Αμμουδάρα βρίσκεται 6 χλμ ανατολικά του Αγίου Νικολάου, στο δρόμο που συνδέει τον Άγιο Νικόλαο με τη Σητεία και την Ιεράπετρα. Η περιοχή έχει αναπτυχθεί τουριστικά και εδώ μπορείτε να βρείτε αρκετές επιλογές για ξενοδοχεία, δωμάτια, ταβέρνες και εστιατόρια.

The first beach you come across, next to the tavern Gargadoros is the main beach of the area. It is pebbly and well organized, a really good choice for those staying in Agios Nikolaos and wanting to escape from the ordinary things. From the main beach, if you walk till the small pier on the north, you will find the second beach from the other side (of the pier).
