Kalamaki is a small seaside village located 65km southwest of Heraklion, between Matala and Kokkinos Pirgos. The beach in front of the village is only a small part (2,5 km) of the vast seafront that stretches along the long Bay of Messara.

The beach of Tripiti is located 7km south of Karave harbor and is the southernmost point of Gavdos and Europe. The eastern part of the beach is sandy, while the part close to the "tip" of Gavdos has large stones and pebbles.

Η Μονή της Αγίας Φωτεινής ήταν ερημητήριο σε σπήλαιο. Σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, η Αγία Φωτεινή έψαχνε να βρει κάποιο ήσυχο και απομονωμένο μέρος από τους υπόλοιπους ανθρώπους, ώστε να αφιερώσει το υπόλοιπο της ζωής της στον Θεό. Ενώ όμως δεν έβρισκε το μέρος που ήθελε, παρουσιάστηκε η Παναγία και κάνοντας θαύμα, άνοιξε τo σπήλαιο στο βράχο, ώστε να μπει η Αγία Φωτεινή.
Kounaviano canyon is the richest (in vegetation) gorge in the prefecture of Heraklion, a real oasis in the center of the province Pediada. The name comes from the village Kounavi. It is a tributary of the river Karteros and runs parallel to Astrakiano gorge, with which in merges at position Kaki Rachi by Skalani and then form the Gorge of Karteros.
Το καταφύγιο βρίσκεται στη θέση Λάκος Μιγερού κοντά στα Λιβάδια και είναι προσβάσιμο με ασφαλτοστρωμένο δρόμο. Από εδώ ξεκινάει το συντομότερο μονοπάτι για την κορυφή Τίμιος Σταυρός του Ψηλορείτη.
