The orientation of the cave is south east and the temperature of the cave is high given the area. During the summer months the humidity of the cave is quite high. Its length is about 30m several narrow passages. From the first room in order to reach the main room, you have to pass through a very small opening. Life in the cave is not developed, probably due to many visitors.
Mavros Kolimbos or Agios Panteleimon is located 51km southeast of Agios Nikolaos and 16km east of Ierapetra. It is a small settlement near the shore, that has faced a mild development during the last decades. There are some rooms to rent around and some small taverns.
One of the nicest villages in Crete is the forested village of Kato Simi by Viannos in Heraklion Prefecture. Together with the ruined village of Pano Simi, they lie in the heart of the largest pine forest of Crete, with the neighboring Selakano and Malles woods included.
Η αρχαία Ίτανος υπήρξε μια από τις ισχυρότερες πόλεις της Κρήτης, ειδικά κατά τους Ελληνιστικούς και ελληνορωμαϊκούς χρόνους. Το όνομα της προέρχεται από τον ιδρυτή της Ίτανο, που καταγόταν από την Φοινίκη. Η επικράτεια της στην ακμή της έφτανε από το ακρωτήριο Σαμώνιο.
The first beach you meet is called Kalami and is named after the reeds (kalami in greek) that are next to it. It is a nice pebbly beach, perfect for seclusion with a spring with fresh water on the beach! There are no tall trees on the beach, but there is a big cave offering natural shade to its visitors, all day round.
At a magnificent location on Mount Oxa, with panoramic views of the lagoon of Elounda, we meet the ruins of a fortified state that is believed to be ancient Naxos. Perhaps, it served as the acropolis of Olous, the ancient town of Elounda.
Ο φάρος του Ακρωτηρίου του Αγίου Ιωάννη ή Αφορεσμένου βρίσκεται 27km βόρεια του Αγίου Νικολάου, κοντά στο χωριό Βρουχάς και στο αιολικό πάρκο στη Μπάμπουρα. Στο φάρο οδηγεί βατός χωματόδρομος που ξεκινάει από το αιολικό πάρκο και στη συνέχεια με σύντομο μονοπάτι που διέρχεται παράλληλα με τους γκρεμούς (παλαιότερα υπήρχε μόνο το μονοπάτι). Το άγριο τοπίο της περιοχής είναι χαρακτηριστικό της Κρήτης, με γυμνά βουνά, απόκρημνες ακτές και πολύ αέρα.
East of the beach of Richtis, you can see the rough and steep mount of Liopetro, which housed the fort of Liopetro (at the site of current Prophet Elijah chapel). Below Liopetro there is the very old church of St. John, accessible through a very bad road starting from the main road connecting Lassithi to Sitia (initially cement road).
