The Ottoman Empire, after the revolution of 1866, founded a new prefecture (liva) that consisted of the current provinces of Apokoronas, Sfakia and Agios Vasilios. This prefecture was called Sfakia Prefecture and its capital was Vamos.

The church of Holy Cross (Timios Stavros) is built on the top of an impressive rocky hill at an altitude of 750m with stunning views of Ierapetra. Inside, it bears some frescoes from the Venetian era.
The church of Agios Nikolaos in Platania, Amari province, is located west of the village, below the road leading to Vistagi. It is a small single-naved arch-roofed temple that bears frescoes dating back from the 14th century in moderate condition.
The Cave Tafkos Giomatas is located near the village of Agia, province Mylopotamos, in the Talean Mountains at position Giomatas. It is one of the most beautiful caves in the prefecture of Rethymnon and was first explored by the Speological Club of Crete (SPOK) in 2003. The decoration consists of imposing curtains, stalagmites, stalactites and columns.
The church of Saint George (Agios Georgios) in Argoulides is built in the 14th century, like the nearby temple of Saints Artemios and Paraskevi. The church bears frescoes from the 14th century and, together with the temples of Michael Archangel and the Annunciation in Vothonas plateau, they are the only churches of Akrotiri area that preserve frescoes.

Το σχεδόν έρημο χωριό Μεταξοχώρι της επαρχίας Βιάννου και νυν Δήμου Ιεράπετρας παίρνει το όνομά του προς τιμήν του Μελέτιου Μεταξάκη, Οικουμενικού Πατριάρχη τα έτη (1921-1923), ο οποίος γεννήθηκε εδώ. Εδώ ξεχωρίζουν οι ναοί του Αγίου Γεωργίου και ο μισογκρεμισμένος κοιμητηριακός ναός της Παναγίας (Εισόδια της Θεοτόκου).
