The Monumental olive tree of Kamilari has been declared by the Association of Cretan Olive Municipalities as a natural monument due to its enormous size. The exact age is unknown. Most similar trees in Crete are aged around 2000 years. But it’s a very powerful and peaceful place also worth the visit.
The beach is mainly rocky and with sand in parts, and a smaller nicer beach is formed north of the main beach. In recent years a large hotel unit in the region has made great interventions to the beach and has unfortunately altered completely the rocky character of the coast. A pier has been built to keep sand and to cover the rocks.
Ο Λέντας είναι ένας απομακρυσμένος παραθαλάσσιος οικισμός που βρίσκεται 74χλμ νότια του Ηρακλείου. Ο οικισμός είναι κτισμένος στην τοποθεσία της Αρχαίας Πόλης Λέβην. Η ονομασία Λέβην πιστεύεται ότι προέρχεται από το φοινικικό Λάβι που σημαίνει Λιοντάρι, καθώς στα δυτικά του χωριού υπάρχει ένα Ακρωτήριο που θυμίζει κεφάλι λιονταριού από μακρυά.
The Villa Ariadne was built in 1906 to reside archaeologist Arthur Evans and during the Second World War housed the German commander of Crete. Here was signed the delivery of Crete to the Allies.
The Monastery of the Holy Trinity in Areti is located next to the village Karydi (close to Neapolis) in a dry and isolated area of Mirabello province. Along with the neighboring Kardamoutsa monastery, they were the most important monasteries of the area (This area has the most monasteries than any other place in Crete).
Η μαλοτήρα (Sideritis syriaca), γνωστή κι ως τσάι του βουνού ή καλοκοιμηθιά, είναι ποώδες φυτό ή θάμνος 10-50cm που απαντάται στα υψηλά υψόμετρα της Δυτικής Κρήτης (άνω των 900m). Το είδος είναι ενδημικό της Κρήτης και η ονομασία του syriaca (αντί για cretica) προέρχεται πιθανόν από σύγχυση του βοτανολόγου που την ονομάτισε.
The red tulip of Goulimis (Tulipa goulimyi) is extremely rare in Crete, as the only confirmed population is limited to a very small area of the peninsula Gramvousa. The population of Crete has shrunk too much, mainly because of the cultivation and tourism. Other less endangered populations are found on Kythera, Antikythera and South Peloponnese.
Τα Λινοπεράματα ή Ελληνοπεράματα βρίσκονται 8 χλμ δυτικά του κέντρου του Ηρακλείου, δυτικά των εκβολών του Αλμυρού Ποταμού. Είναι μια μεγάλη παραλία με άμμο, που ουσιαστικά αποτελεί το δυτικότερο τμήμα της μεγάλης παραλίας της Αμμουδάρας, μήκους περίπου 7 χλμ. Η παραλία αυτή τελειώνει μόλις 1 χλμ δυτικά του Ηρακλείου, μπροστά στο Παγκρήτιο Στάδιο.
