The Gorge of Havgas is located very close to the village Kalamafka, just 12km north of the city of Ierapetra. Note that there are several other gorges with the same name around Crete, such as the Havgas Gorge in Lassithi Plateau.
Το Ανέγνωρο ή Αμπελιτσά (επιστ. Zelkova abelicea) είναι ενδημικός θάμνος ή μικρό δένδρο της Κρήτης με ύψος 3-5 μέτρα. Αποτελεί μοναδικό είδος του γένους Zelkova, της οικογένειας Ulmaceae και χαρακτηρίζεται ως ζωντανό απολίθωμα. Το όνομα "Ανέγνωρο" το πήρε επειδή όταν ανακαλύφθηκε, δεν γνωρίζαν τι είδος είναι.
West of the village Ano Asites the river that initially is the gorge of Saint Haralabos and then crosses the village soon turns into a deep and spectacular gorge, the gorge of St. Anthony.
Η μονή της Παναγίας της Παλιανής είναι ένα από τα αρχαιότερα μοναστήρια της Κρήτης, κτισμένη κοντά στο Βενεράτο Ηρακλείου. Σήμα κατατεθέν της Παλιανής είναι η Ιερή Μυρτιά, ένα αιωνόβιο δέντρο το οποίο μάλιστα εορτάζει 24 Σεπτεμβρίου (Παναγίας της Μυρτιδιώτισσας).
The archaeological site of Fourni is located on the homonym wooded hill, 17km south of Heraklion and west of Kato Archanes. To get there (the site is not open, but you could contact the guard), you could walk along the Minoan path starting from Kato Arhanes or drive to the beautiful artificial grove of Fourni.

The Lammergeier, Lammergeyer or bearded vulture (scient. Gypaetus barbatus) is the rarest species of vulture out of the four that exist in Europe, which’s population has declined dramatically in Greece and it’s in imminent danger of extinction. During the last decades the species was widespread throughout Greece, but today is limited only to the island of Crete.
The 4465 Germans, mainly paratroopers, who were killed during the Battle of Crete, were buried in the German Military Cemetery of Maleme (Deutschen Soldatenfriedhof in Maleme). It is the second German military airport in Greece, as there is another one near Athens.
