The archaeological collection of Ierapetra began to be formed in the late 19th century, when its antiquities-loving residents founded the Educational Association of Ierapetra, whose purpose was to gather and preserve the region’s antiquities, as well as to create a museum collection.
Chamoprina wood is a wood with low oak trees, located 4km south of Malia town. It can be accessed very easily from Malia, because it is located on the road connecting the old village of Malia with Krasi village.
Keri grove is located at an altitude of 300 meters, 9km west of Heraklion, near Voulismeno Aloni and south of the gorge Almyros. It can be accessed via a short dirt road that starts about 300m after Voulismeno Aloni.
Το μοναστηριακό σύμπλεγμα που είναι μετόχι της μονής Μεγίστης Λαύρας του Αγίου Όρους έχει χαρακτηριστεί ως ιστορικό διατηρητέο μνημείο. Αποτελείται από νεώτερα κεραμόστεγα νεοκλασικά κτίσματα που περιβάλλουν το ανακατασκευασμένο στο 19ο αιώνα μονόχωρο κεραμοσκέπαστο καθολικό.
Στην ανατολική μεριά του μεγάλου Κόλπου του Καρτερού υπάρχει το μικρό ύψωμα της Παλαιόχωρας στο οποίο υπήρχε ο μινωικός οικισμός της Αμνισού. Tο όνομα αναφέρεται ως a-mi-mi-so στις πινακίδες Γραμμικής Γραφής Β΄. Στην Αμνισό βρέθηκε ένα Μινωικό λιμάνι, πολλά κτίσματα και ένα υπαίθριο αρχαϊκό ιερό, στο οποίο λατρευόταν ο Δίας.

Spiliotissa gorge is located about 24km south of Heraklion. It is a lush ravine that runs from the village Houdetsi, crosses Agios Vasilios, and ends in the valley of Peza. The best part of it is that between Houdetsi and Agios Vasilios (1.5km long).
