Agia Fotia watermill near Spili
(1 Vote)

The watermill of Agia Fotia is located below the church of Saint Photini (Agia Fotia), at the exit of the Agia Fotia Gorge at the foot of Mount Vorizis and very close to Spili.

What makes it impressive is the stone-built aqueduct that led the water from the source of Agia Fotia to the mill for grinding the grain. The pipe that carried the water today is preserved for a distance of 75 meters. The water, after passing through 8 tall arches, filled the ligato, i.e. the vertical well above the miller's house. When the miller wanted to grind, he opened the hole in the bottom of the ligato and the water under pressure hit the impeller of the mill and thus the millstone turned.

Despite its size and its position just below the main road that leads from Spili to Agia Galini, it is not easily noticed due to vegetation from tall cypress trees. They say that the mill was built at the beginning of the 20th century and was destroyed three times, but was repaired again. The last miller, Stefanos Vassilakis or Kondylis, abandoned the mill around 1960 when modern technology made the operation of traditional flour mills unprofitable.
