On the west side of the imposing fort of Fortetsa in Rethymnon and above the sea we meet the cavernous church of Agios Spyridon (celebrates on 11 August and 12 December). The church dates back to the late 16th century and is one of the oldest surviving temples in the city of Rethymnon.
The double aisled temple of Jesus Christ our Savior (Afendis Christos) and Saint Charalambos is located in the district of Kato Mera, near the port of Ierapetra and very close to the fortress of Kales. It is the oldest temple in the city, which has taken its present form as a result of successive interventions.
The area of Malles in Ierapetra province is well known for rich vegetation, mainly from pines and many water springs. In this mountainous area, there are many streams forming waterfalls along their course. One of the area's most easily accessible waterfalls, which however has water only after many rains, is the waterfall of Exakousti, formed right above the Monastery of Exakousti.
In the Barotsiana district of village Argyroupolis there is the church of Our Lady (Panagia) Barotsiani, a single-storey 13th-century church, to which a chapel of Saint Anthony was added later. The name comes from the Venetian family Barozzi, who owned the area of Argiroupolis.
The church of Agios Georgios is located in the plane of Ano Viannos, on the road that leads to the Monastery of Agia Moni. It is a small vaulted and single-aisled church with its interior bearing frescoes of Ioannis Mousouros, dating back to the beginning of the 15th century (there is the date 1401). The temple was built at the expense of Georgios Damoro.
The church of Saint Photine (Agia Fotini) is located east of the Preveli Monastery and very close to the imposing Kourtaliotis gorge and the beach of Preveli. It is a small single-nave with a simple exterior, with only one decorative element; a cross with four pinakia (ornamental round ceramic plates) above the entrance.

The province Mylopotamos is famous throughout Crete for the production of charcoal. In many villages you will meet the kilns where wood are converted to charcoal with a very tedious process. Originally the cut firewood is stacked to form a hemispherical pile. Because the wood will get burned without flame, the wood should be placed touching each other as much as possible, so as to spread the fire from wood to wood.
