The present-day settlement of Sougia is built on the site of ancient Syia, which flourished mainly in the late Roman times. Underneath the surviving cemeterial temple of Saint Panteleimon there are the remains of a three-aisled basilica with a 20.80m x 12.40m narthex, which has been excavated by A. Orlandos.
The church of Agios Nikolaos in Kandanos (Selino province) is located in the center of the village. Its exterior reminds of a modern church, just like many Byzantine temples of Selino, but its interior bears traces of very old frescoes. The frescoes are hidden beneath the plastered walls, some parts of which have been revealed by the Archaeological Service.
The church of Saint George (Agios Georgios) is a single-nave vaulted temple and bears well-preserved 13th and 14th century wall paintings. The temple seems to have functioned as a convent, as evidenced by the ruins of buildings that were probably the monks' cells.
Λίγο ανατολικά από τον αρχαιολογικό χώρο του Ασκληπιείου και πάνω στο δρόμο θα δείτε τη μικρή Βυζαντινή Εκκλησία του Αγίου Ιωάννη του Θεολόγου, που κτίστηκε από υλικά παλαιοχριστιανικής Βασιλικής, η ύπαρξη της οποίας πιστοποιεί ότι η πόλη ήκμασε ως και τα Βυζαντινά χρόνια.
Στο κέντρο του χωριού Αξός Μυλοποτάμου και ακριβώς πάνω από την κρήνη που ξεδιψάει τον επισκέπτη με το γάργαρο νερό της, βρίσκεται ο δίκλιτος ερειπωμένος ναός του Μιχαήλ Αρχαγγέλου. Ο ναός έχει κτιστεί πάνω στα ερείπια παλαιοχριστιανικής βασιλικής, της οποίας διακρίνονται ακόμη τα ίχνη της μεγάλης ημικυλινδρικής αψίδας του ιερού βήματος.
Ο ναός του Αγίου Ιωάννη του Θεολόγου βρίσκεται στα όρια του οικισμού Κισσός της επαρχίας Αγίου Βασιλείου και εορτάζει στις 26 Σεπτεμβρίου. Είναι μικρός καμαροσκέπαστος του 13ου αιώνα, με σχετικά μεγάλο ύψος σε σχέση με τις άλλες του διαστάσεις, θεμελιωμένος σε φυσικό βράχο.
The hill Katrinia in the area of Piskokefalo, province Sitia, hosted one of the most important peak sanctuaries of Minoan Crete, where pilgrims from the surrounding areas came to praise their deities and devote their tributes. Three sacred caves have been identified in the same area, just like in other peak sanctuaries in Crete (e.g. Giouchtas, Pirgos near Tylissos, etc.).
