In winter the area turns to a very important wetland. The whole area of Vatalos is full of reeds and covers a distance of 2 kilometers with ponds full with amphibians and birds... In several places the water is kept throughout the year, but the best time to go there late February to early May.

Ο Ναός του Αγίου Νικολάου στα Πλατάνια της επαρχίας Αμαρίου βρίσκεται δυτικά του χωριού, κάτω από το δρόμο που οδηγεί στη Βισταγή. Είναι μικρός μονόχωρος καμαροσκέπαστος ναός που φέρει στο εσωτερικό του τοιχογραφίες του 14ου αιώνα σε μέτρια κατάσταση.
South of the village Malles in the province of Ierapetra lies the deserted village of Loutra, where the imposing church of Agios Georgios still dominates the place with a large cypress tree next to it. Just south of the village Tsourouniana of province Kissamo we meet the ruined church of Christ. The church of Agia Paraskevi is located southeast of the village Argoules, above the small stream that ends on the beautiful beach of Agia Marina. It is a small single - nave, arched temple that has undergone a draft and inappropriate restoration with cement, as the southern wall had collapsed and its murals were in danger.
