Thripti Plateau is located next to the village of Kavousi, in Ierapetra area, at an altitude of 850m. It's really one of the most beautiful places worth visiting in Crete, which is totally unknown to most Cretans. Its natural beauty is very special and so are the Thripti mountain hiking trails, which are part of the European path E4, which starts from the Iberian Peninsula, passing the Alps down to Crete, where it stops in the mountains of Sitia.
The archaeological site of Kommos is located 4km west of Phaestus, near Pitsidia and Matala. Kommos (or Komos) was a small Minoan town founded in 2000BC and served the port needs of Phaestus, with which it was linked by road. Kommos was probably destroyed by an earthquake in 1700BC, but survived up to the Hellenistic period.
2 χλμ βόρεια του Αγίου Νικολάου θα συναντήσετε το ιστορικό ξενοδοχείο Mirabello. Μπροστά από το ξενοδοχείο υπάρχουν δύο μικροί κόλποι με δύο υπέροχες μικρές αμμουδιές. Στη μία, που βρίσκεται δίπλα στο ξενοδοχείο υπάρχει μια μικρή μαρίνα και εξέδρες, ενώ κι οι δύο παραλίες είναι καλά οργανωμένες με ντουζιέρες, μπαρ, ξαπλώστρες και ομπρέλες.
The Late Minoan vaulted tomb of Maleme is located very close to the German military cemetery and the historical airport of Maleme. The tomb was already been looted since the early 20th century and was badly damaged by a bomb during the Battle of Crete.
Ο Κόφινας είναι η ψηλότερη κορυφή στα άγρια Αστερουσία Όρη με υψόμετρο 1231m και παίρνει το όνομα του από το σχήμα του που μοιάζει με ανάποδο κοφίνι. Στην κορυφή του, με τη μοναδική θέα στο Λιβυκό Πέλαγος, σήμερα υπάρχει ο ναός του Τιμίου Σταυρού που εορτάζει στις 14 Σεπτέμβρη.
Κοντά στον οικισμό Μονή Σελίνου συναντάμε ένα πολύ μυστηριώδες μνημείο, μοναδικό στην Κρήτη. Πρόκειται για μια μικρή κωνοειδή πυραμίδα με περίμετρο 16μ και ύψος 4,60μ., η οποία είναι λαξευτή. Μέσα της υπάρχει λαξευμένο δωμάτιο διαστάσεων 2,20μ x 2,10μ και ύψους 1,40μ.
Το Αρκαδιώτικο φαράγγι ξεκινά βόρεια από τη Μονή Αρκαδίου και μέσα από μια πανέμορφη διαδρομή 2 ωρών (σε πολλά απροσπέλαστα σημεία παράλληλα από το φαράγγι) καταλήγει στο χωριό Πίκρης όπου ο επισκέπτης μπορεί να θαυμάσει σημαντικά βενετσιάνικα αρχιτεκτονικά μνημεία.
The Cretan white-toothed shrew (scient. Crocidura zimmermanni) is the only endemic mammal in Greece, found only in Crete, but it is displaced by the introduced lesser white-teethed shrew (scient. Crocidura suaveolens). Moreover, the smallest mammal of the world, the Etruscan shrew, is the third species of shrew met in Crete.
