Lake Kournas and its surroundings constitute a very important ecosystem for Greece. Kournas is one of the very few areas of Crete where plenty of fresh water is stored throughout the year. For this reason, it is protected under the Natura 2000 program.
The majestic black beach of Aspes is located about 58km south of Heraklion, in one of the most remote and inaccessible areas of Asteroussia Mountains. It is situated 4km east of the hamlet of Treis Ekklisies.
The beach of Malia is the eastern part of the vast beach (6km length) starting from Stalis. It is a wide beach with fine sand and shallow waters. It is so crowded that there is no space between the sunbeds to fit a pin! Here you can find whatever comfort you ask.
The gorge of Patsos or Agios Antonios is located 8 km southwest of the Monastery of Arkadi, in the heart of the lush province of Amari. The water of the gorge is poured into the dam of Potamoi. Trekking in the gorge is very easy since it is managed by the Forest Service.
Το επιβλητικό σπήλαιο του Δία, το Δικταίον Άντρον, βρίσκεται σε απόσταση 15΄ ανάβασης από το χωριό Ψυχρό του Οροπεδίου Λασιθίου, σε υψόμετρο 1025μ. Στο Ψυχρό υπάρχει άνετος χώρος στάθμευσης με πολλά εστιατόρια, από τον οποίο ξεκινούν δύο μονοπάτια για το σπήλαιο. Το ευκολότερο μονοπάτι είναι αυτό στα αριστερά, καθώς στο δεύτερο (και πιο παλιό) οι πέτρες έχουν φθαρεί από τους χιλιάδες τουρίστες και γλιστράνε.
The impressive cave of Zeus, the Diktaean Cave, is located just 10 minutes walking-distance from Psychro, in Lassithi Plateau, at an altitude of 1025m. In Psychro there is plenty of parking areas, with plenty of restaurants nearby. Two paths leading to the cave start from the parking area. The easiest path is the left one, because in the right path (the oldest) the stones are worn by thousands of tourists and are slippery.
Crete is located in the middle of the South East Mediterranean sea and abounds in fish species. Here we present a list of the most commonly met fish of Crete. This can be a valuable guide for snorkellers, so as to recognize the fish they see while snorkeling.
