Historical Archive of Crete

The Historical Archive of Crete was established in 1920 in Chania and operated informally until 1928, when it was recognized as a public entity. Since 1943, it is a Public Service and operates as an annex to the General State Archives. Its collection numbers around 700.000 historical documents and manuscripts, dating from 1821 till today. The Archive is considered the second in size and importance in Greece, after the General Archive of Athens.
The about 170 archival collections of the Office include:
- Revolutionary archives - Official Mail of the Cretan Revolutions 1821 - 1830, 1866 -1869, 1877-1878, 1895-1898 and the Movement of Theriso (1905).
- Private archival collections from the various periods of Cretan history, with mail from the Chiefs of the Revolutions, Lieutenants, Chieftains and other prominent persons.
- Archive of Cretan fighters.
- Ottoman Archives and the Archive of the Central Translation Bureau of Crete.
- Notarial Archives of the late 19th century.
- The entire file of the Cretan State, i.e. the time that Crete was declared autonomous (1898-1913) .
- Archival material referred to World War II
