Ancient Apollonia (Agia Pelagia)
At the cape of Souda, above the shrine of Evresis on the beach of Agia Pelagia we see some traces of the excavations carried out by the archaeologist Stylianos Alexiou. At this point he discovered the most important archaeological site of the wider area, the Prytaneum of the Hellenistic town of Apollonia (or maybe Panormos). The town was located at the site of the current Agia Pelagia settlement and there are several points were excavations have revealed buildings inside the hotel at Souda Cape.
The Prytaneum was regarded as the religious and political center of the community and was thus the nucleus of all government, and the official "home" of the people. The building also served as the common meal room for the men of the town, as shown by the two fire places found.
