Asfendou Gorge

The canyon of Asfendou is one of the many gorges in Sfakia province, starting from almost deserted village Asfendou that currently houses some local sheep herders, and ends at the village Agios Nektarios. Along the canyon runs a passable but steep trail, in most places parallel to the streambed. In many places the South Cretan Sea is visible.

The vegetation in Asfendou is not as dense, compared to other canyons in the province of Sfakia, and is mainly limited to the riverbed. In the trail you will meet the cave of the Shepherd. Shortly before reaching the deserted village Kolokasia, it is worth visiting the frescoed cavernous church of Saint Anthony (Agios Antonios). Kolokasia is one of the finest examples of authentic traditional Cretan architecture, with arches dividing the houses into 4 parts. There are also two chapels still surviving, dedicated to Saint George (Agios Georgios) and Panagia (Virgin Mary).
