Trail Margarites - Houmeri
(1 Vote)

The part of the E4 trail that starts from Margarites and finishes at Houmeri is mostly along the main road connecting the villages of the area (Pigouniana, Orthes, Kalandare, Kalamas, Pasalites). Thus it is very easy to explore, even by car or bicycle, when you avoid the small parts that come from a hiking trail and use the road instead. The highlights of the route include the ceramic centre of Margarites village, the well preserved samples of the tradional house architecture and some important churches.

Initially we start walking in Margarites village (altitude 280m), where it is worth visiting the monastery of Saint Gedeon and the Byzantine church of Saint John. Moreover, Margarites is famous for the traditional pottery and you will see many shops selling ceramics. From Margarites, we walk to Pigouniana (altitude 370m) and then to Orthes (altitude 320m), known for the old stone cisterns.

We then head to Kalandare (altitude 280m) and then to Kalamas (altitude 265m) where we should visit the old Byzantine church of Saint George. We then walk to Pasalites and then in the wooded hiking trail to Houmeri (altitude 235m). All villages hosts some very beautiful traditional stonebuilt houses and vegetation consists mainly of olive trees, some of which are many centuries- old.
