Trail Garazo - Zoniana - Anogia
(1 Vote)

This part of the European trail E4 starts from Garazo and reaches Zoniana through the bed of the river Oaxis, which is the extension of Zoniana gorge. It then ends at Anogia through the paved road. Most of the route meets the typical Cretan landscape, with olive groves, limestone rocks and low vegetation.

We start our route from Garazo with the nicely formed square and the scenic old settlement. We can visit the lush green position of Kato Vrissi, where the first refreshments' business in Crete used spring water for the products. From Garazo we walk in the main road to Zoniana/Anogia, but soon get the turn to Omala settlement. From Omala, we keep walk in the road that soon drives us back in the main road to Zoniana.

We get the road to Diskouri monastery, where we can spend some hour. From Diskouri we follow the trail that merges with the bed of Oaxis river. We keep walking in the river till we meet the small stadium of Zoniana and enter the village. We can visit the Wax museum of Potamianos dedicated to Cretan personalities. We should definitely visit the imposing cave of Sfendonis, some meters out of the village.

The next station from Zoniana is Anogia and we follow main road to there, ignoring the junction to Axos. The first suburb of Anogia is called Perahori and it hosts the house of one the most legendary Greek singers, Nikos Xylouris. We finish our course in the main square where we can enjoy our coffee, food and local desserts. Indeed, bear mind that Anogia is famous for galaktoboureko, a milk cream based dessert
